DPP compliance dates vary by sector. Some regulations are already active (wine), others have firm dates (batteries), and many depend on delegated acts that the European Commission has not yet finalized.

At a glance [#at-a-glance]

* **Wine e-labels** are mandatory since December 2023.
* **Battery passports** become mandatory on 18 February 2027.
* **GS1 Sunrise 2027** is a voluntary industry migration to 2D barcodes -- complementary to, but separate from, ESPR enforcement.
* Textile, electronics, and other sector timelines depend on delegated acts expected between 2025 and 2030.

> **Warning**
> Dates marked with \~ are approximate. The European Commission may adjust timelines as delegated acts are finalized. GS1 Sunrise is an industry initiative, not a legal deadline.

GS1 Sunrise 2027 vs ESPR enforcement [#gs1-sunrise-2027-vs-espr-enforcement]

These are **complementary but distinct** initiatives:

| Aspect | GS1 Sunrise 2027 | ESPR DPP enforcement |
| ------------- | -------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| **Driver** | GS1 industry association | European Commission |
| **Nature** | Voluntary migration to 2D barcodes in retail | Legal mandate for Digital Product Passports |
| **Timeline** | End of 2027 target | Sector-specific, starting 2023 (wine) |
| **Scope** | Retail point-of-sale barcode scanning | Full product lifecycle transparency |
| **Mechanism** | Industry cooperation and retailer readiness | Delegated acts with enforcement penalties |

The Sunrise migration makes 2D barcodes (QR codes, Data Matrix) standard in retail. This directly supports DPP adoption because the same QR code that encodes a GS1 Digital Link URI can serve both point-of-sale and DPP use cases.

Sector details [#sector-details]

Wine (active) [#wine-active]

Wine e-labels have been mandatory since December 2023 under EU Regulation 2021/2117. Required data includes ingredients, nutrition declaration, and allergens. This is the simplest regulatory dataset and EUlabel's Phase 1 focus.

Batteries (Feb 2027) [#batteries-feb-2027]

The Battery Regulation (2023/1542, Art. 77) requires individual battery passports with chemistry, capacity, state of health, carbon footprint, and material composition. Access is tiered: public data for consumers, restricted data for notified bodies and recyclers.

Textiles (~2027-2028) [#textiles-2027-2028]

Expected to require fiber composition, chemical substances (REACH), repairability index, carbon and water footprints, recyclability information, and certifications. The delegated act is not finalized.

Electronics (~2028-2030) [#electronics-2028-2030]

Higher uncertainty. Expected to cover energy efficiency, repairability, hazardous substances, and end-of-life recycling information.

Iron, steel, aluminum (~2028-2030) [#iron-steel-aluminum-2028-2030]

Prioritized in ESPR but delegated acts are pending. Expected to focus on carbon content, recycled material percentage, and supply chain traceability.
